Voices from Ukraine Film Series: Earth at FLETCHER FREE LIBRARY
Join us at Fletcher Free Library for a screening of Earth (1930), the first of a 4-film screening and discussion series presented by Voices from Ukraine and hosted by Fletcher Free Library and South Burlington Public Library. Stay after each movie to discuss the films and enjoy traditional Ukrainian cookies. Earth will be shown at Fletcher Free Library, 235 College Street, Burlington.
Dovzhenko's Earth has been praised as one of the greatest silent movies ever made. The British film director Karel Reisz was asked in 2002 by the British Film Institute to rank the greatest films ever made, and he put Earth second. The film portrays collectivization in a positive light. Its plot revolves around a landowner's attempt to ruin a successful collective farm as it takes delivery of its first tractor.
A discussion will follow the film. Facilitator Orly Yadin is a researcher, producer, festival director, and professor of documentary history. Orly has worked in the film industry in various roles for 45 years. Her film Silence was shortlisted for an Academy Award. Orly arrived in Burlington from London in 2004.
