My Vermont Eyes: Poem - "Five Black Birds in an Ivorian Sky"

African American woman speaking in a classroom with hand gesturing up

Join Dr. Jolivette as she shares her poem titled 'Five Black Birds in an Ivorian Sky' and stories about her family's trip to the West African Ivory Coast cities of Abidjan, Gagnoa, Daloa, and to Paris, France. This 60-minute Open Studio will focus on the migration of recent immigrants to the U.S., building family within the U.S., and Black American and African immigrants' stories, and raising children who are bi-cultural, but is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to other relationships and experiences.
The audience will hear mother-daughter stories and father-daughter stories about Dr. Jolivette’s family with one parent born in the U.S. and the other born outside of the U.S. and what that means to the parent and to the child.

This event will be held in the Quiet Reading Room.

No registration is needed.

For a sampling of Dr. Jolivette's poetry reading, check out this video of the Feb. 1 devotional at the Vermont Statehouse for the beginning of Black History Month. The reading runs from the beginning of the video to minute 3:36. The poems are My Migration Part 1 by Jolivette Anderson-Douoning and  "Midway" by Naomi Long Madgett.
