Kawaii Culture in Japan and Beyond

Popular anime character Hello kitty sits cross-legged on the floor in front of a tea set. On the wall behind her, brightly colored illustrations and an illuminated panel with Japanese script.

The Kawaii aesthetic has given the world Hello Kitty, Tamagotchi digital pets, "Pik-a-CHU!", and so much more. With roots going back centuries in Japan as well as a deliberate corporate branding push beginning in the 1960s, this “cuteness” sub-culture contains more than meets the very large eyes. University of Chicago professor Nisha Kommattam will touch on the history and current ramifications of Kawaii culture while exploring the appeal of some of our favorite Kawaii characters. This program is part of Vermont Humanities' Snapshot Series of free talks held at locations around Vermont. Please register for this free event. Join us in person or attend online.
