Melo Grant: Sampling and the Evolution of Hip Hop

Color photo shows a DJ's left hand on a turntable and mixer all-in-one. Photo is set against a background of rich red diagonal striping.

Melo Grant -- DJ, host of The Cultural Bunker, and Burlington City Councilor -- leads a musical journey through the evolution of hip hop, with side steps to other genres. She explains how sampling -- the practice of using existing recorded music to create new sounds -- influenced hip hop and vice versa.

Melo Grant has been DJ in the Burlington community for 40 years. Her radio show “The Cultural Bunker” has been heard on WRUV 90.1 FM, UVM's public radio station, and WBTV 99.3 FM, the Media Factory's public radio station. She plays mostly independent hip hop but frequently incorporates other grooves.
