Voices from Ukraine Film Series: 20 Days in Mariupol at FLETCHER FREE LIBRARY

Visit the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington for a screening of 20 Days in Mariupol (2022), the final installment of a 4-film screening and discussion series presented by Voices from Ukraine and hosted by Fletcher Free Library and South Burlington Public Library. Stay after each movie to join in the discussion and enjoy traditional Ukrainian cookies. 20 Days in Mariupol will be shown at Fletcher Free Library, 235 College Street, Burlington.

An AP team of Ukrainian journalists trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol struggle to continue their work documenting atrocities of the Russian invasion. As the only international reporters remaining in the city, they capture what will become defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more.

After nearly a decade covering international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war, for The Associated Press, 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL is Mstyslav Chernov’s first feature film. The film draws on Chernov’s daily news dispatches and personal footage of his own country at war. It offers a vivid, harrowing account of civilians caught in the siege, as well as a window into what it’s like to report from a conflict zone, and the impact of such journalism around the globe.

A discussion will follow the film. Facilitator Deb Ellis is a documentary filmmaker who makes films that focus on social justice and activism.  She is a professor at the University of Vermont. Her film Moving Train (2004) was shortlisted for an Academy Award in the feature documentary category in 2005.
